The God of Whom we are ever mindful, Whom we worship and adore, is the righteous God.
He is what is right, the pinnacle, the mount, and also the source of right, justice, and equity. He determines and decrees all things rightly and perfectly. He does what is right. He gives laws that are right. He executes righteous, lawful justice. Anything right and righteous on earth is of Him, Jehovah our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6).
God Himself is above law, in that there is no standard, no constitution outside of Himself to which He might be held accountable…
no god, no law giver, no judge above or besides Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the sole, supreme Tribunal
Therefore there may be no questioning God and His way whether He may be right or wrong.
Pots may not question the Potter God’s authority and right to make from the same clay lump of humanity one vessel for honor, and another for dishonor--electing and then shaping some, and not others to salvation. Of the sovereign, righteous, and gracious election of Jacob and the sovereign and righteous reprobation of Esau, the Apostle writes:
Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! For He says to Moses, I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion. (cf. Romans 9: 14-24)
The righteous Judge of all the earth did right, with no unrighteous prejudice, when he destroyed the unrighteous, proud, and sexually deviant Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the plain (Gen. 18, 19)
God righteously foreordained, cursed, and condemned the Canaanites in the cursed line of a grandson of Noah, and righteously authorized and commanded Israel to be His right hand in their execution.
Though man wickedly and lawlessly crucified the Savior, God righteously and graciously delivered His only begotten Son to such a death according to His determined purpose and foreknowledge (Acts 2:23), for the revelation of His holiness, justice, and love, and the accomplishment of our salvation.
Next time we worry about a virus, complain about an inconvenience, or chafe under the unrighteous governance of baby-killing, economy killing, man-pleasing authorities, let us remember:
*God is the righteous Lord even over plagues.
*Our inconvenience is opportunity to wait on Him…for work, haircuts, and trips to the national parks…by faith in the God and Judge Who is doing right and graciously to increase our faith and delight in Him.
*The powers that be are put in their high places by the righteous God (Romans 13: 1-7), who is righteous even in His ordination and authorization of Caesars, tyrants, power-grabbers, and quislings.
Midst all that is not right in this world, let us remember the righteous God above, and, when our faith is weak, or we are given to gripe, listen carefully to the Holy Spirit’s question to each of us little pots:
Who are you to reply against God? (Romans 9: 20)
Listen carefully. Humbly. Meekly. The Spirit speaks the truth of our Messiah, of righteousness and mercy met together on His cross, now, right now, to be testified in His body and in you.
For such a time as this.
With you in Him, confiding in the Savior and His truth and love,
