Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”Hebrews 13:5
Since we’ve been saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that the love of money, dissatisfaction with what [we] have (v5), and the lust of “sexually immoral and adulterous” relationships (v4) still become a temptation we must fight tooth and nail, is evidence of the corruptions which still remain in mortal flesh (Gal 5:17). The apostle gives us the answer to these struggles in the verse we meditate upon today. The precious Treasure of heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ, has promised He will never leave [us] nor forsake [us]. He to whom God the Father sent to earth to walk as flesh and blood Man, living the perfect sinless life, suffering God’s infinite and eternal wrath for sins He did not commit, bearing your sins and mine as if they were His and never once denying them, enduring physical agony on the tree while mocked and shamed by those made in His image and after His likeness, dying alone, forsaken, and cursed upon a tree, and shedding His precious, untainted blood through His pierced side for our forgiveness, has promised to stay with you and me for eternity. He who was forsaken has not only forgiven our sins, but has promised never to forsake us and to be ever with us. This is why money need not be a pursuit. The Treasure of heaven is our eternal possession: “Whom have I in heaven but you?” (Psa 73:25a). The Lord Jesus is our passion:“And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you” (Psa 73:25b). Yet, in our flesh, we are weak: “My flesh and my heart may fail” (Psa 73:26a). Nevertheless, the precious Prince gives us power: “but God is the strength of my heart” (Psa 73:26b); for He will never leave us nor forsake us: “and my portion forever” (Psa 73:26c).
Whom have I in the heaven’s height, But You alone, O Lord; Though struggles in my flesh will fight, Your promise keeps me through Your Word.
