The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. Psalm 29:4
The psalmist has much to say about the voice of the LORD, as seen throughout this psalm. Today, let us consider the power and majesty of the voice of the LORD as it pertains to Christ; and having devoted ourselves to the Lord Jesus, let us find devotional application from the verse. As perfect Man, the ear of the Lord Jesus was tuned to the voice of the heavenly Father. He said, “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me” (John 5:30). Jesus is also eternal God, and before His incarnation, His voice stirred the prophets of old: “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me’” (Isa 6:8). During His ministry, as holy God, the voice of Christ calmed the storm in the sea (Mark 4:39), cast out mute and deaf spirits (Mark 9:25), rebuked fevers (Luke 4:39), forgave sins (Mark 2:5), and declared His sacrifice sufficient to pay the sin debt in full (John 19:30). Having risen from the dead and ascended into heaven, the voice of the Lord Jesus can be heard in the Word through the Holy Spirit, for “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom 10:17). It is the voice of the Lord Jesus who affirms to us heavenly truth, just as He said to Pilate before He went to the cross: “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice” (John 18:37). It will be the voice of the Lord Jesus we hear when He returns: “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God” (1 Thess 4:16). The voice of the Lord Jesus is powerful and majestic yesterday, today, and forever.
Let’s tune our ears: Christ’s voice to hear, His truth within the Word; It’s powerful to draw us near, His majesty, we’ve heard.
