A spy in the midst! He would betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (cf. Matthew 26: 1-16).

Thirty pieces of silver. This was, according to Old Testament law, the value of a slave, Exodus 21:32.

Whatever the precise significance of the silver, Judas did not think much of Jesus.

He did not know the truth: Jesus is of matchless worth!

Certain Greeks, however, Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover feast, sought Jesus.

They seemed to appreciate at least something of Jesus.

They had heard no doubt of His miracles, and perhaps some of His teachings.

To the disciple Philip they come: Sir, we wish to see Jesus. (John 12: 21)

But why? Did they truly value Jesus? Had these Greeks come to worship Him? Were they just curious? Were they fan-atics like the Palm Sunday crowd—lots of excitement about Jesus, but in the dark about His true identity and mission?

We do not know why these Greeks wanted to see Jesus. Nor do we know if Jesus ever granted them an interview.

What is revealed is Jesus’ words spoken at this time: Savior words on spy Wednesday.

Savior words…

Of a grain of wheat having to die, but then it producing much grain…

Of the necessity of hating one’s life, serving and following Jesus if one would be honored by His Father…

Of His glorifying the Father as the faithful servant of the Lord, treading the dreadful path of the cross…

Of His being lifted up on a cross to draw all peoples to Himself (John 12: 23-33)…

Hear this? This is our dear, precious Savior speaking, ever so humbly,

of His preeminence revealed as Savior and Lord of sinners to the glory of His Father in heaven!

Spy Wednesday? No! Savior Wednesday.

Jesus: on the way to the cross, to redeem us not with gold or silver, but with His precious blood.

Would you see Him? Love Him. Love His blood. To know His love…for you.

For such a time as this.
