The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer. Psalm 6:9
It is upon this verse every prayer of ours is heard and accepted, not just because it is written in the Word, but because it is fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of you have heard me preach this truth for years; as well as write about it in devotionals, perhaps not as eloquently as this truth should be heralded. Its power is in the living and exalted truth that all the pleas of our Lord Jesus were heard of His heavenly Father and every one of His prayers were accepted of Him. Remember what Jesus said at the tomb of Lazarus, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me” (John 11:41-42). Certainly, this doesn’t mean that every answer to our prayers is ‘yes.’ Even Jesus prayed in the garden on the night He was betrayed for the cup to pass from Him (Luke 22:42). Yet, Jesus must pray that prayer because He was under total submission to the Father’s will, and for the Lord of Light and Life to rush headlong into death and the unbridled wrath of God would have been a sin, being exactly what Adam did in Eden. Prayer is never our grocery list of wants and desires. It is the blessed spiritual and heavenly submission to the Father’s perfect will, plans and purposes, unto His glory through Christ’s exaltation. Through pleas and prayer, we are seeking the Father’s will, His way, and His wonderful glory. In Christ, every plea is heard and every prayer is accepted; and we will rejoice regardless of the answer, whether yes, no, or wait. And, if in our ignorance we pray somewhat amiss, rejoice that the Lord Jesus has already gone before us in perfect prayer as holy Man upon earth, that He continues to intercede for us while upon His throne (Heb 7:25), and that the Holy Spirit also intercedes because we don’t often know how we ought to pray (Rom 8:26).
Unto my supplication the Lord did hearing give: When I to him my prayer make, the Lord will it receive. (Scottish Psalter, 1650)
