"More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb." Psalm 19:10
The context of this verse reveals that David was emphasizing the value and sweetness of God's word. The Scriptures are much more valuable than wealth and possessions. That is easy to believe intellectually, but harder to really live by. But, it's true! God's word is also sweet to the soul of those who have been brought to love the Lord Jesus Christ. The word of God provides a nourishment and satisfaction that is far superior to a rich 5-course meal. In verses 7-9, David gives both descriptions and blessed effects of the Scriptures.
Descriptions of Scripture:
Perfect (Without Blemish; Complete/Sufficient)
Sure
Right (Straight, Upright)
Pure
Clean
Endures Forever
True and Righteous
Effects of Scripture:
Converts the Soul (Turns one away from sin and to God; Restores)
Makes Wise
Rejoices the Heart
Enlightens the Eyes
The Scriptures tell us the gospel of God's salvation through Christ, the glorious character of God, the heinousness of human sin, the wisdom of God for living, the promises of God for strength and comfort, and the hope of glory to come. Yes, these realities are more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. But, hear verse 11, "Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward." We must heed Scripture! Not just hear it or read it, but believe it and practice it. Great blessing is promised to those who so do.
Practical application for us all:
1. Pray that God would make you long for and value His word.
2. Apply yourself diligently to it. For some of you, this quarantine is giving you more free time. Don't waste that opportunity. Read, study, hear sermons, meditate on the gold mine of Scripture.
3. Ask God to help you understand it even more. Don't give up when it's hard.
4. Believe it and live it!
