Spiritual IGNORANCE

Thomas Edison said, "we do not know a millionth part of one per cent about anything." Of course he was speaking in the natural realm. As far as spiritual things are concerned, however, we know absolutely nothing. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). Asaph, though referring to himself, declared that which is true concerning the spiritual condition of every fallen son and daughter of Adam when he said, "so foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before Thee" (Psalm 73:22).

Through great study over a period of time, it is possible for a man to learn a great many things. If you open a science or history book and give yourself to diligent study, you will acquire much knowledge in those fields. However, there can be no understanding of spiritual and eternal issues apart from the revelation of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist maintained, "A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven" (John 3:27). When Simon Peter announced that he believed Jesus of Nazareth was "the Christ, the Son of the living God," the Savior gave this explanation for His disciple’s declaration. "Flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 16:17).

May the God of compassion and grace grant to each of us spiritual knowledge and understanding that we would receive the things of the Lord and not remain in ignorance of eternal matters.
