Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,Ephesians 3:20, KJV
The flesh is a wily thing. The inhabitants of Canaan represent the idolatrous tendencies of the flesh, which is why the LORD commanded Israel not to covenant with them (Ex 34:12). We are the people of God, redeemed by His grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; yet, the flesh, like the Amorites and Canaanites of old, will attack and attempt to raze our holy habitations. At times, we take our salvation for granted. We forget the power of God’s Spirit to call us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Words from Christ through the apostle, as in this portion from Ephesians 3, are important reminders that the power that worketh in us is the same power supplying us the riches of His glory and strengthening our inner being (Eph 3:16); that the Lord Jesus Christ dwells in our hearts through faith (Eph 3:17a); that God’s love in Christ is the stabilizing truth that keeps us rooted and grounded (Eph 3:17b) and strengthens us to grasp with our conscious thoughts the vast, infinite expanse of God’s love in Christ (Eph 3:18), and to know Christ’s love intimately, beyond the knowledge of our senses so that we may be filled with “all the fullness of God” (Eph 3:19). God is far more abundantly able to do this, beyond what we ask or think, for “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Cor 2:9, KJV). Christ is the eternal God who spoke to Moses face to face (Ex 33:11) and revealed unto him the name of Yahoveh (Ex 34:5-6) when He placed the prophet in the spiritual foreshadow of Christ’s pierced side, the cleft of the Rock (Ex 33:22). What a great, good and gracious God we have in Christ!
Our conscious thoughts must be of love, Not lusts of flesh and th’ world; But God’s true love from heav’n above, In Christ by His pure Word.
