Does it matter if we accept Genesis 1 - 11 at face value...as recording the beginning of the history of the universe, of the solar system, of the earth, of biodiversity, of human life, of sin, of death, of increasing wickedness, of God's judgment-by-water, development of languages, scattering of people into distinct groups and areas, etc.?
You bet it does.
If we reject the historicity of Genesis 1 - 11, then we set up a precedent for rejecting every other biblical doctrine, for all the major doctrines have their foundation in Genesis 1 - 11. Even other societal practices are rooted in Genesis: definition of "day"; definition of the seven-day week; reason we need a day of rest; why we wear clothes; definition of sin; definition of death; requirement of the sacrificial substitute as payment for our sin; 1st murder; etc.
