This Psalm starts off with a blessing, He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The blessings here promised are not for all believers, but for those who live in close fellowship with God. Mr. Spurgeon writes, âEvery child of God looks towards the inner sanctuary and the mercy seat, YET all do not dwell in the most holy place; they run to it at times, and enjoy occasional approaches, but they do not habitually reside in the mysterious presence.â âSurely He shall deliver thee.â SURELY in light of our state in Christ we can expect protection, preservation, and provision from Him who controls providence. SURELY He shall deliver us, we are as frail as little birds, even more so, yet above all God is our shield and our defense. The Lord said unto Abraham, âFear not, I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.â In Psalm 7:10 David says, âmy defense is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.â David says also, âsome trust in chariots, and some in horses: but I will remember the name of the LORD my God.â And again he says, âI will sing of thy power; I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning; for thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.â Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler. Who is this fowler? Satan! He is the fowler who betrays unguarded souls in a thousand ways. Should we fear him? No, but we should beware of him and pray against him. âVain his threats to overcome me, When in faith I take the sword; Then with ease I drive him from me; Satan trembles at the word, When my Helper Makes me strong in Christ my Lordâ. (Wm. Gadsby) And from the noisome pestilence. Pestilence is from a Hebrew word, âA speaking thingâ; it proclaims the wrath of God among a people. The Septuagint renders it DEATH. âSo the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand menâ (2 Sam.24:15). âI will smite them with the pestilenceâ (Num.14:12). God sends the pestilence and only He can terminate it. In such trials and circumstances this Psalm assures us âHe shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.â There are hawks in the sky and snares in the fields, yet harmless to those nestled under the Fatherâs wings. Dangers lurk about us both day and night, and oh how frail we are. âTruly as the Lord liveth ⌠there is but a step between me and deathâ (2 Sam.20:3). Those who commune with God are safe with Him, no evil can reach them, for the outstretched wings of His power and love cover them from all harm.
