Fruit is the product of a seed sown. While many limit this to be the Spirit’s work in regeneration, note that here it is attributed to the work of the LORD Jesus Christ. His death is described as a seed sown that produces fruit, John 12:24. It is that righteousness which He worked out by His obedient life and death as the Substitute for His people, of which even the regenerating work of the Spirit is a fruit, or product. If any are regenerated by the Spirit of God and given faith to believe on Christ in truth, it is because of the full, free and satisfactory work that the LORD Jesus Christ accomplished for them, unto the glory and praise of God. The fruits of righteousness are the “all things” (forgiveness of sins, justification and peace with God) that were freely given, or imputed, to the elect when Christ died, Romans 8:32. Made known to them by the Spirit through the Gospel, upon regeneration, Col. 1:13.
