1 Kings 8:58, “That he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers.” To have hearts always inclined to God is the real answer to all our woes. We must pray, “Draw me, we will run after thee” (Song 1:4). The prayer for a godly inclination and divine drawing is confession of a contrary disinclination and other drawings. We are naturally prone to stray. Such an inclination to godliness and spiritual pursuits above worldly and sinful can only be obtained by God’s grace. For that grace we have to earnestly pray, “Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness” (Psalm 119:36).
“Were we naturally and spontaneously inclined to the righteousness of the law, there would be no occasion for the petition of the Psalmist, "Incline my heart." It remains, therefore, that our hearts are full of sinful thoughts, and wholly rebellious until God by his grace change them” (John Calvin).
