The Fixed Heart

Psalm 112:7, “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.”

Here is the description of the God fearing man. One who is calm, firm, content, anchored. This heart is not driven about, disturbed and uncertain. It is anchored in God’s word by faith. It is tied to the harbour of rest. David in the midst of his woes testified to this very thing. “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise” (Psalms 57:7). What this means is that he does not allow his heart to wander. Nothing distracts us like bad news. It puts us out of sorts and sometimes it may cause us to lose focus on prayer and Bible reading. It is said when fearsome soldiers entered into the study of Archemides with swords drawn, he was so taken up about his mathematical schemes, that he took no notice of them. If we really have the Lord before us and are taken up with Him it won’t matter what distractions surround us.

“His heart being fixed in solid reliance upon God, a change in his circumstances but slightly affects him; faith has made him firm and steadfast, and therefore if the worst should come to the worst, he would remain quiet and patient, waiting for the salvation of God” (C.H. Spurgeon).
