Taught by a dog

Job 12:7, “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee.”

Job here tells us that the birds and the animals can be our teachers. There are endless stories of animal instinct as being instructive to man. Some of these examples are set forth in Scripture but there are very many found in the annals of secular history.

We can ask the dog about faithfulness.

Sabinus was a Roman general who was executed and his body was publicly exposed as a warning to others. Nobody, not even close friends, would dare be seen approaching the body with any kind of reverence or respect. His faithful dog however remained true. For days the animal watched the body of his slain master. Eventually his howling obtained the sympathy of many. Food was brought to the dog and he was encouraged to eat. However, instead of devouring it in his own hunger, he endeavoured to put it in his master’s mouth. Never did he leave the side of his master until the body was at last taken by the authorities and thrown into the Tiber. Even into the river the dog followed his master, clasping desperately the corse between his paws and vainly endeavouring with all his power to preserve it from sinking to the bottom.

“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
