Here the psalmist adopts a good attitude as he comes to God’s word, namely, to be a listener. This is the spirit with which to enter God’s house and with which God’s people ought to sit down in the pew. Indeed, it ought to be a matter of prayer even as Eli advised young Samuel, “thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:9). There is no blessing if we turn away from the the voice God as Hebrews 12:25 reminds us, “See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.” The prophet Habakkuk adopted a similar attitude, when he said, “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me.”
