Here we are told that God’s Word is a lamp giving light. The Psalmist says something similar, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). One aspect of the power of its light is to reprove. It gives “reproofs of instruction” that is, instructive reproof. Paul says that all scripture is profitable for reproof, (2 Timothy 3:16). If we would be well instructed we must receive the reproofs of God’s Word both when we read it and when we hear it preached. If we bury the light and do not allow the word to prick our hearts then the darkness of our hearts will be the result. We will then get off the right path, we will not be on the sound and healthy way to live our lives, because “reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”
