John 14:18, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

Our Lord Jesus is wonderfully kind. He knows He is about to die and that the fearful death of the cross, but His concern is for the ‘little children’ around Him. The One soon to be forsaken contemplates them as orphans, for the word “comfortless” has that image in the background. He is however not only compassionate He is also powerful. Even though He is soon to be “crucified through weakness,” yet He can still say with authority “I will.” There are a number of mighty “I wills” of Christ in this 14th chapter of John's Gospel. Each one is to be noted and all are to be believed. Contemplate them and do not doubt your Saviour’s gracious promises. Receive and be comforted.

The “I will” of glory. “I will come again” (John 14:3).

The “I will” of answered prayer. “If ye shall ask anything in My Name, I will do it” (John 14:14).

The “I will” of intercession. “I will pray the Father” (John 14:16).

The “I will” of comfort. “I will not leave you comfortless” (John 14:18).

The “I will” of presence. “I will come to you” (John 14:18).

The “I will” of love. “I will love him” (John 14:21).

“How comfortable it is to have One, day and night, before the throne to control the charge of our enemy, and the despondencies of our souls” (Stephen Charnock 1628-1680).
