Contentment in the Sanctuary
Psalms 84:10, “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” A day with God in His house is better than a long time passed in any other place. David is even very happy with a humble place in the sanctuary. He is satisfied should he only get into the porch. Content and happy just to be counted among the people of God. Just to be able to get in the door and worship with the saints! This doesn’t sound very ambitious you might say. You would be right. The man of God has no desire to rise to eminence. He doesn’t seek great things for himself. It is enough that he has health, desire, strength and opportunity to praise God and hear His Word in the assembly.
As John Calvin says; “Many are to be found who desire to occupy a place in the Church, but such is the sway which ambition has over the minds of men, that very few are content to continue among the number of the common and undistinguished class. Almost all are carried away with the frantic desire of rising to distinction, and can never think of being at ease until they have attained to some station of eminence.”
