George Muller and Prayer

“..the prayer of faith..” (James 5:15).

George Müller, was born this day (27 September) in 1805. He was the famous director of an orphanage in Bristol, England. He cared for over 10,000 orphans in his lifetime. The financial responsibilities were immense and Müller constantly prayed for the needs to be met. One morning Muller thanked the Lord for breakfast. The children bowed their heads with him, even though there was nothing on the table and no food in the orphanage. As they finished praying, there was a knock on the door. The local baker was standing with fresh bread to feed everyone. Behind him the milkman stood. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage and he unloaded his fresh milk with Muller.

Countless stories could be told of his remarkable prayer life. Once, while crossing the ocean, the ship he was sailing on ran into thick fog. He explained to the captain that he needed to be in Quebec by the following afternoon, but Captain Joseph E. Dutton said it was impossible for he must slow the ship for safety. Müller asked to use the chartroom to pray for the lifting of the fog and the captain unbelievingly followed him down, “it will be a waste of time.” After Müller prayed a very simple prayer, the captain started to pray, but it was with unbelief and Müller stopped him. He believed the prayer had already been answered and said, "Captain, I have known my Lord for more than fifty years and there is not one instance that I have failed to have an audience with the King. Get up, Captain, for you will find that the fog has gone." When the two men went back to the bridge, they found the fog had lifted, and Müller was able to keep his appointment. The captain became a Christian shortly afterwards.

Muller died in 1898 aged 92.

“The first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day is to have my soul happy in the Lord” (George Muller).
