Isaiah 49:16, “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” We may forget the Lord. Indeed there are times we do forget the Lord. The Lord however can never forget His people. They are constantly in His mind and He is ever watchful over them. That is what the text is saying in a very pictorial way.
It has been known at times for men to write things on their hand so as to be reminded of some important matter. God engraves the names of His saints on His hands. We usually write things down on paper or note it on our electronic devices. These things can be misplaced or devices can malfunction. God can never lose His hands. The Redeemer of sinners can never experience that which befell the god of the Philistines, 1 Samuel 5:4, “Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off..”
What did the Lord say to Thomas? “..behold my hands” (John 20:27). This morning the Lord would have you to do that. Just look and see your name engraved in His hand.
We likewise are to secure God’s Word to our hand so as to remember our Lord and His holy will: “And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes” (Deuteronomy 6:8).
“The dying thief’s extremity could not suggest a prayer larger than “Lord, remember me!” and thy greatest sorrow cannot ask for a more complete assuagement than this — ‘Lord, show me that thou hast graven me upon the palms of thy hands’” (C. H. Spurgeon).
