Hudson Taylor’s Wall Texts

1 Samuel 7:12, “Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.”

Genesis 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh.

On this day, 3rd June 1905, Hudson Taylor, the famous missionary to China died. He was a man taught of the Holy Spirit. He was full of faith and early learned to trust God. Endless stories are related in his biography how he proved God. “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply,” he said.

Upon the wall of his home were nailed two scrolls with large Chinese characters. They were the texts he carried with him wherever he lived in China. On the one side was Ebenezer,"Hitherto hath the Lord helped us," and on the other, Jehovah Jireh,"The Lord will provide." They were his mottoes and they expressed his strong faith in his Saviour. One text described the past; ‘Ebenezer,’ reminded him the Lord had never failed, never disappointed and had always been a very present help. ‘Jehovah Jireh’ assured him the Lord would continue to provide for the remainder of the journey of life.

“His love in time past forbids me to think

He'll leave me at last in trouble to sink;

Each sweet Ebenezer I have in review

Confirms His good pleasure to help me quite through” (John Newton 1725-1807).

“We may fail, do fail continually, but He never fails” (Hudson Taylor 1832-1905).
