The Immeasurable Debt!

Luke 16:5, “... How much owest thou unto my lord?”

This was the question which the unjust steward put to every one of his lord’s debtors. It might well be put to every one of us concerning what vast amounts we must owe our Lord.

All our sins are pictured in the Scriptures as debts owing to God. We have no idea of the extent of it; we could not even begin to tell “how much?” Still less could we pay the vast amount. Yet, he freely forgives all in His marvellous grace.

We are debtors to the Lord for our very being. Debtors to Him for health and strength. How much we owe Him for all the meals on our table and the endless comforts in life. When our calculation to count our blessings continues, we soon discover the sum total can never be computed. Our debt to the Lord is immeasurable. We have to stand in awe and say, “Oh my soul! how much owest thou unto thy Lord!”

As immeasurable as this debt is, it is still ever increasing, onward accelerating. Yet through our Saviour’s grace never once do we hear, “pay that thou owest.” Oh the marvel of Divine grace!

“Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.” (Original 1707 words of Isaac Watts 1674-1748).
