We had tickets to a Razorback football game and we had about an hour to eat supper before heading to the stadium. My boss was taking a few employees out to dinner and the game for a bonus. He wanted to take us somewhere nice but the place he had in mind was closed. None us were familiar with the part of town but we all knew of great places on the other side of Fayetteville. With no time to get over there and back, we started driving to the stadium. As we drove we saw a restaurant that was packed with cars. None of us had ever heard of the place but it must be good judging by the crowd.

When we walked in I was shocked to see a scantly clad hostess. I though to myself, it’s a college town and I guess young girls lose their decency away from home. We were seated at the last empty table and had just began to discuss her outfit when our waitress walked up wearing the same costume. “Welcome to the Tilted Kilt!” To which I asked “What is the Tilted Kilt?” She basically said it’s just like a Hooters but with Irish food. Oh great! How many people do I know in here? We didn’t have time to go anywhere else so I just kept my head down and gave strict instructions not to tag me in here on Facebook. We ate fast and left before I ran into someone I knew.

There’s an old saying about how to find a good restaurant while away from home. It goes like this: “Eat where the locals eat.” I have used this old adage many times and I’ve discovered some great food over the years. Honestly, it was the best Irish hamburger I’ve ever had, it was also the only Irish hamburger I’ve ever had. The only problem with following the locals is that they weren’t raised the same way you were. Their taste may differ, their morals may be loser, and they may not see anything wrong with their way of life.

Many Christians have ended up in the same situation as I did that evening by simply following the crowds. It is not the crowds that make a place bad. It’s what draws the crowds that we must be aware of. Nobody was there because those Irish burgers were so much better than Steak-N-Shake. They were there because these waitresses didn’t dress like the ones at Cracker Barrel. The next time you see a crowd ask yourself “Why are they here?” This simple question could save you a lot of temptation and embarrassment.

When you are seeking a new church ask yourself “Why are these people here?” Is it for the spiritual food or just the eye candy? If the food is average at best and they still have a big crowd you can bet there must be a secondary attraction. My advise is to keep your head down and get out there before someone sees you. You shouldn’t always go where the locals go, trust me.
