I used to think I was smarter than my father. I was around 18 years old at the time, and my father, a Methodist preacher, wanted me to enroll in a Methodist college. The last thing I wanted to do was go to a Methodist college because I didn’t believe the Bible. So, I decided to go as far away from the Methodist college as I could. I thought Bible believers were boring people. If they had any real intelligence at all, they wouldn’t believe in the Bible.

Boy, was I in for a surprise! God used some Christian students at my secular university to lead me to Christ, and I became a preacher. As I’ve studied the Bible over the years, I’ve found it to be anything but boring. It contains great, real-life stories like the one about a man who outran a chariot (1 Kings 18:46), the day when the Earth rotated backwards for twenty minutes (2 Kings 20:11), and the father who had 88 children (2 Chronicles 11:21).

One of the greatest things about the Bible is the way it all ties together. It combines history, science, drama, and poetry to elevate one Character: God. It’s a book only God could write because it covers the beginning of human history all the way to the end (spanning several thousand years). It shows how God’s plan has unfolded, and how it affects everyone in the world. The more I study, the more I understand why intelligent people believe the Bible: simply put, it makes sense, and it works when you apply it to your life.

Maybe you have a lot of questions about the Bible. You might have been taught not to believe it as you grew up. You may have heard that it’s unreliable and full of errors. Don’t take someone else’s word for it — study it for yourself. It’s not a boring book, and its Author isn’t a boring Person. Once I started reading the Bible, I found that the people who believed it weren’t such boring people, either. I began to see the difference it was making in their lives and in my life, and I believed it, too. That didn’t take much intelligence at all.
