An Attitude of Gratitude - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5

Edward Spencer was a diligent student studying ministry at Northwest University in 1860. As part of the rescue squad, he had also become a skilled lifeguard. When a ship named the Lady Elgin ran aground in Lake Michigan, Edward readily volunteered to assist in the rescue. He braved the freezing water, dashed around the floating wreckage and began to rescue one person after another. Despite sustaining injuries, he singlehandedly rescued seventeen passengers. Sadly, because of his selfless heroism, he became so ill that he never recovered and passed away at only 31 years of age. At Edward’s funeral, it was noted that not one of the people he had rescued had ever come back to thank him.

What a sobering thought and reminder that we should always show gratitude to those who impact our lives. Although we shouldn’t do things for praise, it is encouraging when someone takes a moment to stop and say, “Thank you,” isn’t it? It brightens our day and reminds us what a joy it is to serve others.

Saying “Thank you” is a display of humility. It is a recognition that we needed that person’s help to succeed, or a recognition that they brought us joy. How often do we neglect to show gratitude? Sometimes we tell ourselves, “I’ll be better about that when life slows down.” Unless we make a conscious effort to show gratitude, life will always be too busy, and the people that mean something to us may never know how much they impacted us.

Today, purpose to show an attitude of gratitude. Thankfulness can be displayed through a simple smile and a genuine “thank you.” It can come from a note, a phone call, or an email. Make time for the people that have blessed you. They made time for you. The Lord knew you needed them in your life, and they answered His call. Maybe they need you today.
