This radically new lifestyle will require radical new power. Paul continues to contrast the weakness in which you and I now live, with the power in which our new resurrections bodies will be raised. These brand new features are exactly what we fallen sinners stand in need of. Who has not lived in this world and felt weak. For many, just the simple daily grind is too much to bear. Even for many Christians, the disciplines of prayer and reading God’s word are considered beyond their capabilities. What really becomes a challenge is the focusing of our fallen minds on Christ and His heavenly glory. Our post-fall minds are lazy, especially when it comes to spiritual things. One exception to this rule seems to be when the sinful heart desires the object of its sin with uncontrollable urgency—then, the mind is able to plot and plan even without sleep until it captures the seeming epitome of its desire. (This seems to be the sordid state of Amnon’s mind in 2 Samuel 13)

What I am saying is that weariness and weakness need no introduction in our fallen environment; we all experience them. Yet, what beauty we can see in the mind of God as He fully understands our weakness—He remembers how we are formed and that we are dust (Psalm 103:14). He, in fact, clothed Himself with the very same frail frame, in which He died, and then ascended gloriously to the Majesty of heaven. He understands your weakness and in His compassion, has not abandoned you there! In the beautiful thoughts of God are intentions to take His weak, wobbly, impotent people out of this fallen world and fill us with a delightful new power never yet believed possible.

Obviously, God will not give His people unlimited power, such as the power He Himself enjoys, but He will give us such power that one of the things that characterises our new bodies will be that they are powerful. In the infinite God’s mind, a body characterised by power is a significantly powerful body. Let’s not cheapen this concept and compare our resurrections bodies to the idea of the cartoon and movie “superheroes”, but think of this power with a quality, maturity and thrill that surpasses those small ideas.

Possibly one of the most descriptive thoughts regarding this power is to consider your present spiritual yearnings. How many things would you pursue in your Christian life in service of God if only you had the power to do them? How would you sing? How would you preach? How would you evangelise? How would you care for the helpless? If you could do everything you desired in the furthest reaches of your purest spiritual desires, without ever growing weary or finding something too taxing, what would you do?

It is here that I see the beauty in God’s intentions toward me. He will so empower me in His presence and so expand my understanding of my function before Him forever that the exercise of my glorified personal faculties will thrill me, and Him for ever and ever. This truly is life. This truly is the fullness of joy. This truly is eternal pleasure. No restriction, weariness, exhaustion ever again, but complete, satisfying, thrilling service in the presence of a delightful God for all eternity.
