A Lifelong Process - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Psalm 138:7–8

A little faith in a big God will take you a long way – unless it flies out the window. A 12-year-old boy sat on a bus with a picture in his hands. The caption on the picture said, “Have Faith in God.” As the bus started moving, a gust of wind carried the picture away, and it blew out the window. The young boy ran to the front of the bus and begged the driver, “Please stop the bus! I’ve just lost my faith in God!” If you were the bus driver, how would you respond?

Sometimes it doesn’t take much more than a gust of wind to make faith fly away: We are late for work. Our plans change without warning. A co-worker makes an insulting comment. We have a bad day. The kids get sick. We have a flat tire on the way to work. A friend looks at us the wrong way. We fail a test. After going out of our way to please the boss, we feel unappreciated. When these things happen, we quickly lose our faith in God. Doubt, fear, anxiety, and anger take its place. How do we get our faith back? We must take our eyes from our circumstances and look at God again.

Faith is not trying to fix our problems on our own. That’s not how life works. God wants us to trust Him to solve our problems, and then they won’t control us anymore.

Has your faith ever flown out the window? Bring it back by remembering who God is and what He can do. Remember the times He’s helped you in the past and trust Him to take care of you in the future. You will try and fail at this — get up and try again. Faith-building is a lifelong process, but if you hold on, it will be the most rewarding thing you’ve ever done.
