As we survey and progress through the Songs of Degrees we might take time to consider Psalm 128 as an extension of Psalm 127! In Psalm 127 we see:
1. The home (a place of protection for the children) is in building (v1)
2. The home’s success and the children’s safety are dependent upon the partnership of the builders with the Lord (v1)
The home protects the children from harm from without.
3. The children are protected, when outside the home and in the city, by the watchmen. (v1)
And so we see the children must be protected both inside and outside the home.
Note: I am viewing the house as symbolic of a godly home. You must labor faithfully with the Lord if you expect to have a godly home, and it will take time to get where you need to be.
3. In verse 4 we see that children reckoned to arrows require much work to get them from a useless branch to an effective arrow to be used against the enemy
4. In chapter 128 the home is now built.
5. The children are now protected, molded, and shaped into usable vessels, but they need more.
6. They need a spiritually fruitful mother adorning the home (v3)
7. They need to be positioned to grow in the Lord (i.e. seated around the table)
8. They need spiritual nourishment or food for growing to maturity (v3)
To summarize, children need:
- A spiritually building father working in partnership with the Lord (127.1)
- A home that protects them from the evils of the world (127.1)
- One to watch and protect them when outside the home(127.1)
- Discipline, development, and direction for their life making them usable vessels (127.4)
- A spiritually fruitful mother (128.3)
- Position for nourishment and growth (128.3)
- Spiritual nourishment and food (128.3)
Until next time may the Lord bless you.
