It was an ordinary day around the house until I saw something unusual. An uninvited guest, a tiny bat, had fallen out of our fireplace. “Karen, I want you to take the dog, go into the laundry room and shut the door behind you.”

“But, why?” replied my wife.

“Because, I said so.”

That answer didn’t suffice. So, I did everything I could to convince her without giving her the reason why. Finally, I had to tell her about the intruder. Screaming commenced, the dog lost what little bit of self-control it had and chaos ensued.

Often, we go through testing in our Christians lives that we don’t understand. We spend countless hours lying awake at night trying to figure out why. We question the Lord’s faithfulness and forget that He has a perfect plan for our lives. Instead, we should keep at the forefront of our minds that God always wants what’s best for us and doesn’t need to give a reason. I believe that God does not answer all of our why’s today because if we knew everything we had to go through over the course of our lives we would quit.

As the master potter sits down to mold his intended design, should the clay look up at him as it spins around in circles exclaiming, “Why, why, why?” Of course not, if the clay had a voice it would have no right to ask the skillful potter why he is doing what he is doing. The potter is literally taking a simple lump from the ground and fashioning it into something more useful and beautiful than it could have ever become on its own.
