Today's Scripture: He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Psalm 23:3

As you travel through modern-day Israel, you will still see shepherds out in the fields with their sheep. Often on a hillside, you will see the sheep milling about, looking for those elusive green blades of grass. One thing that sticks out in a scene like this is the well-worn paths or trails on the hillside. However, the sheep don’t naturally follow the easiest, well-worn trail. The shepherd must lead them.

In the same way, our Good Shepherd guides us. The well-worn trails are there because it’s the easiest way to go. They are also the safest paths where the least number of bad things can happen. However, we are just like sheep and often tend to stray from the right path.

Why wouldn’t we follow the easiest path? Why wouldn’t we stay on the proven path and do what we know is best for us? The only thing I can say is, we’re sheep; we want to go our own way and do what we want to do. It is part of our sin nature that we want to do bad things, even though we know they will harm us.

If the Lord is your Shepherd, He is going to guide you on those well-worn trails. If you have strayed from those paths, He will find you and bring you back. Those trails are the best way to go, and your loving Shepherd guides in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Devotional by Jim Scudder, Jr.
