How can you miss the intimate nature of this psalm? It breathes a deep, satisfying interaction between two persons. One of the persons is the great God who lives in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16). The other is the ordinary man, David, grappling for words as he writes this simple, profound poetic stream. With all of His overflowing passion, kind intentions and resources, this God pours delight, personally into the life of this run-of-the-mill man. Through the Scriptures, God speaks pictures of exquisite grandeur into this specific man’s heart, creating a strong yearning to be absorbed into His agenda. This vision into the beauties of the is the raw substance of Christian motivation, especially when the believer comes to appreciate the fact that God personally has pursued him personally in order to deeply satisfy his soul forever! Could you ever dream of a beauty more delicious than that?
Savour verse 7. There David feels the urge to shout with joy because the LORD Himself counsels him. God wants David to see and understand more and more, and as he pours over God’s word, God is feeding him delight after delight. David is like a newborn chick in the nest feeding from his parent. The parent intends for these little pink blobs to grow into adult birds so she feeds them day after day at great effort. At the right time their eyes open and they begin to see the one who is feeding them. They become strong and learn to fly, appreciating the thrill of life. So the LORD counsels David, and every believer; feeding and feeding them until they see, mature and thrill in the wonderful design of the image of God. There is still so much to see and learn. There is a vast wealth of enchanting knowledge of the truth still to be discovered.
To struggle alone and to fail repeatedly is one on the most discouraging experiences of human life. David here knows he is not alone. Not only is he not alone, but he has a companion who has immeasurable resources at His fingertips. More than that, this Person has thoughts toward him that would make him blush forever if he had the capacity to grasp them. In fact, David says in Psalm 139:17, “How precious to me are your thoughts O God! How vast is the sum of them!” Notice the emotional atmosphere in this statement. There is a vastness and dearness in the thoughts of God toward him that he fails to find words of description. What then would he say if he were able to comprehend the fullness of even one of God’s kind thoughts toward him? What would you say? It is the grasping of this thought that drives Christians on to lovesick devotion to the Lord.
With an understanding of these thoughts, this union between gracious Saviour and rescued, undeserving saint becomes unassailable (Psalm 16:8-10). With the vast power and devoted thoughts of God holding the object of His love fast, how can that saint be shaken? How can he fall away from such a God? How can he lose interest and be more absorbed with the toys littered on the floor of this world’s playpen? How can such a God give you up while His heart is overflowing with compassion (Hosea 11:8)? Is your heart aroused like David’s was by the thoughts of God toward you?
