Have you ever struggled with a particular problem only to see someone else seemingly find resolution faster than you? Perhaps you felt a twinge of jealousy. You wonder, “Why is everything so easy for them?”

This is what was probably going through the mind of Saul as he heard the incessant chants of praise directed toward David, the skinny, inexperienced, shepherd-boy-turned-hero.

A giant held the entire nation of Israel captive with fear for over six weeks, and now this guy comes along and takes care of him with a couple of rocks and a used slingshot.

Saul’s problem wasn’t jealousy. It was a problem of faith. Saul’s confidence was in himself. Experienced in battle, large in stature, and an impressive leader, Saul relied on his own skills and preparation. But when he ran up against an enemy much bigger than he, the once-proud king shrunk back in fear. It became his battle instead of God’s.

On the other hand, David knew he couldn’t possibly beat Goliath. He was aware of his own weaknesses, but also aware of his all-powerful God. It wasn’t David’s battle, it was God’s.

So often we’re like Saul. We take on all the pressures of what God has put before us instead of yielding it to Him. We must remember. The battle is not ours, it’s God’s.
