Confidence You Can Trust - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Philippians 1:6

Have you ever desired to earn someone’s trust? Maybe you wish your parents would entrust you with greater responsibility, or you desire to earn a promotion from your boss. Perhaps, as a pastor, you want your congregation to trust your leadership during a critical time in your ministry. Regardless of age or occupation, as human beings, we all want to be trusted.

Can you imagine how encouraging it was to the Philippians when the Apostle Paul affirmed that he trusted them? Philippians 1:6 says, “He that hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Paul was saying, “You can do it! I believe in you!” And that compliment was not conditional. Why did Paul trust these people? Was it because they were a perfect church? No. Because he knew that God, who had started His work in their lives at the time of their salvation, was working out His perfect will through them even then.

Paul was speaking directly to the Church of Philippi in his letter, but he speaks to every believer today as well. Paul’s was not empty faith in their ability to grow in Christ. Paul believed in the quickening power of the Gospel which led to salvation and inspired (not required) good works.

God has a plan. He has confidence in your ability to do His will for your life. Whether you’re 6 or 66, you can trust that God has confidently placed you where He needs you to be. Trust in His confidence today.

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder
