How to Perish Beggarly Rich
There is something in the human heart that simply won't accept that it is as bad as God says it is, and that they need God's salvation as much as they do. Even Jesus' disciples had a hard time understanding this. Jesus is exalting people who are takers, not givers. Jesus' examples include the helpless children and a rich young ruler; the latter, an exemplary man. He seems to be a good candidate for eternal life. Yet Jesus shows that in contrast to how thing appear, this man was the least qualified for the kingdom. Jesus revealed his unwillingness to completely trust Jesus, rather than being controlled by his resources. He neither understood salvation, nor Jesus Himself. He is proud and he can't see his own need for salvation. Jesus' test pinpoints this issue. Only in Jesus is everything to you--in the way you rely on Him--have you avoided the trap into which this rich young ruler has fallen. If this is true of you, thank God!
