“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The Declaration of Independence was and is a profound document. It was something that the world had never seen. Not only were the colonies declaring their independence, but they also were declaring their God-given rights. Chief among these rights was that all are created equal under God. It was a profound and spiritual thing that the Founding Fathers did.

There were fifty-six men who signed. Twenty-four were lawyers or judges. Eleven were merchants. Nine were farmers or plantation owners. When they signed this document, they were committing treason. They were putting their lives on the line. The odds were not great that these simple colonies could overcome the might of the British army, but they were willing to die for their dedication to the cause in which they believed – the cause of freedom.

Five of the signers were captured by the British and tortured as traitors before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost sons to the war, and two more had sons captured. Nine fought and died from wounds or hardships of the war.

Are you willing to put your name to paper and say, “I am dedicated to my Savior, Jesus Christ, even if it means I lose everything” ? I am thankful that those fifty-six men did sign the Declaration of Independence, and we reap the benefits today, but there is a cause more important for us to be dedicated to – the cause of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
