Are You Weighed Down? - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

If you were to sail around the world in a hot air balloon, what do you think you would take along? Would you bring an arm chair, telescope, or a huge stack of books to make your ride more comfortable? No. You would try to pack as lightly as possible for your long journey. Anything unnecessary would slow your progress and weigh you down.

This same concept pertains to our Christian journey as well. When we are trying to get somewhere spiritually, we need to make sure that we “pack lightly.” When we let unnecessary things like worry creep into our lives, we will be weighed down.

The Lord tells us in our text to be careful or anxious for nothing. He always has our best interests in mind. Although life may not seem like a smooth ride through the clouds, our Heavenly Father is constantly there to protect our every move. Sometimes we get so consumed with our troubles that we forget He is even there.

You may be struggling with the housing market, worried about losing your job, or anxious about your future. Don’t let the cares of this world bring you down. Take heed to the Word of God and be anxious for nothing. Only when you set aside the weight of worry will you be able to soar into the clouds.

Take a moment to jot down today’s Scripture verse on a Post-It note. Stick it somewhere where you can keep it fresh in your mind.

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder
