Is it Morally Wrong to Look at Pornography ? An Interview
FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 2018

The World View spoke to Pastor Scott Brown of the National Center for Family-Integrated Churches about why this is the case. He said that it's the same problem in many cultures.

The interview with Scott Brown starts at six minutes into the interview

Here is the text of the interview:

“For example, Edward Gibbons published a history of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, and he gave five reasons. And the first and really most fundamental factor was the breakdown of the family. You don't have parents teaching their children. You don't have this inculcation of the Word of God when you sit in the house, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”

Brown said that the breakdown of the family creates lots of time for people to engage in satisfying sinful pleasures.

“When you do that you have lots of time to do lots of different things. Another element Gibbons identified is the craving for pleasure, focused on the body, sports becoming more and more important, more brutal, more exciting. It's the exaltation of the body and pride and things like that. And then he also talks about the decay of religion."

Pastor Brown said that the one common factor between all of those is the absence of God's Word.

“They all have to do with a famine of the Word of God. The lamp of the Word of God has gone out. The lamp of the Word of God has gone out.”

Pastor Brown said there are some disturbing trends that have led to porn being a “morally acceptable” sin.

“You have some trends that really began with the sexual revolution in the 1960s. The Supreme Court said it was impossible to define character. You had a whole generation that exalted rebellion against their parents, and you had this family breakdown like we had never seen in America.”

Pastor Brown explained that fatherlessness has not been good for children growing up in a generation that doesn't condemn the sin of pornography.

“You have a third of American children growing up without their biological fathers. And, by the way, the father is not home, and the kids go home and get on the screen. They're not being deployed to meaningful things.”

Brown said that the solution is shepherding and pastors walking alongside their congregants.

“I think the greatest solution is the mobilization of parents to do what the Bible says they should do, and that is to teach their children, to care for their children, to shepherd their children. Shepherds walk with the sheep, and if the shepherds were walking with the sheep, the sheep wouldn't be thinking there's nothing morally wrong with pornography. And they're not, like some of these adults and children watching pornography into the wee hours of the night; no one is there shepherding them."

Pastor Brown said there has been a breakdown of shepherding not just in the family, but also the church.

“I really do believe it's rooted in the destruction of the family and the role of parents and also of the church. The church has become not even a secondary matter rather than the fellowship, the worship, the preaching of the church isn't very important, so there's a lot of time to do a lot of other things.”

Pastor Brown said that pornography is portraying the antithesis of true, godly love.

“It's terrifying for me to think of a whole generation that has grown up in a culture of pornography and what it will do to their marriages. Pornography is the polar opposite of love.

“For example, the Bible makes it really clear that what makes a marriage work is a husband who loves his wife like Christ loved the church and He gives himself up for her and He nourishes her and He cherishes her. Pornography is taking. Pornography is objectifying someone. Pornography is using someone. Pornography is inherently selfish."

Pastor Brown shared the advice he gives to young men when they get married.

“I've done a number of weddings of young people over the years, and one of the things I try to tell the young men is, 'If you've ever seen anything in pornography, don't do it. Don't do it because it's nothing but selfishness.’ Don't replicate that in your bedroom. Go read Ephesians 5.”

Pastor Brown asked that the body of Christ would pray for more shepherding in the homes and more of God's Word.

“We should pray that parents would shepherd their children by walking beside them and taking them to green pastures and not letting them go to bad pastures and the brackish poisonous water. Homes need to be filled with the Word of God. It's the Word of God that's the great protector and it gives blessing to all those who heed it. Those two things are the most critical."

Pastor Brown concluded by saying that the church of Jesus Christ should be crying out for a revival of biblical church practices of the preaching of the Word, the reading of God's Word, taking the Lord's Supper, and Christian fellowship.

Ephesians 5:25-28 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the Word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.”
