This morning we continue in our instruction in the ten commandments. We hear now the ninth commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” This is the second law of God having to do with the sin of the tongue. In the wrong body (of the wicked) the tongue is a remarkable agent of evil: set on fire by hell, a world of iniquity, defiling the whole body, James 3 tells us. Thus we must careful what we say—for we are prone to speak evil, and to lie and slander, and even to think very little of it. We must be wise. And known by what we do, and say, as those who in deed and in word are Christ’s. So hear a proverb from the wise Solomon, and the wise God. For divine, sovereign grace wisdom among us and from our lips. Wisdom…and its glorious fruit.
