Out of Gas - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Ephesians 5:22–24

He saw it as a good investment, but his wife thought he lacked the time and expertise to manage it. Guess who was right? As a young preacher, Dr. E.V. Hill struggled to make ends meet. This led him to invest in a gas station. As his wife, Jane, suspected, E.V. did not have the business experience to run the station, and he eventually lost it.

Jane could have taken the opportunity to rub E.V.’s failure in his face and say, “I told you so.” But when her husband called to announce his loss, she simply said, “Alright.”

E.V. expected Jane to be disappointed because the gas station represented a great deal of money for their family. But when he returned home, Jane sat down with him and said, “I’ve been doing some figuring. I figure that you don’t smoke and you don’t drink. If you smoked and drank, you would have lost as much as you lost in the service station. So it’s six in one hand and a half-dozen in the other. Let’s forget it.” Jane had the maturity to respect her husband’s unwise decision and still submit to his leadership. Then she showed grace to forgive him when they had to deal with the consequences. That was one of her finest moments.

Ladies, there will be times when you have differences of opinion with your husbands. You may be right and he could be totally wrong. It takes strength and maturity to let him be a man and make decisions on his own, even if you think they are unwise. It takes even more strength to forgive him when he makes a mistake. Don’t make him feel bad about his decision. Don’t throw away his authority as a leader in your household. Show him love and unconditional forgiveness. Submit to him, and you will help him become an even better leader. Your grace will not be forgotten. Your husband will look back on it as your finest moment.

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder
