I'd like you to take a moment and realize the full weight of David's situation. His family has been kidnapped. Everything he owns has been stolen. His men came within a hair's breadth of stoning him, and it was only by the grace and power of God that David regained the obedience of his soldiers. His men are weak from a three-day journey, he's been unable to resupply his food sources, and two hundred of his men are so exhausted that they can't continue searching for their kidnapped families. The size of his army has been reduced by a third.

In this dire, frantic moment, David comes across an Egyptian slave who has fainted from sickness and hunger. It would have been very easy for David to ignore the Egyptian, pass him by, and make all sorts of rationalizations and excuses for why he couldn't help this man. David could have claimed that he didn't have the time, that he had to take care of his own, first and foremost, or that he didn't have anything to give. David didn't do any of these things. Instead, David looked outside of his own situation and his personal needs to help someone else. Because David was willing to be generous, he was given instruction on how to resolve his own situation.

Everyone will face times of great distress and trial in their life. When those times of struggle come, it is important to remain aware of others' struggles. We need to be generous and aid them in their situation so that our hearts remain warm and open to the leading of God.
