WONDER OF WONDERS âHis name shall be called Wonderfulâ Isaiah 9:6
In this day that we are living there is not so much emphasis put on a name except for the fact that they like the sound of it or that it is popular. But I myself think names should be chosen with thought. I like names carried on from one generation to another. I like names that have meaning. Names become fitting to a person; as the father of two boys I wanted to choose names of character for them. Then there are those called by names of description that more than often do not fit or belong to them. In our text Christ is called Wonderful, because it does fit Him, He is so. God the Father did not give His Son a name that He did not deserve. There is no eulogy or flattery; it was a name fitting to His character and purpose. They that know Him best will say that the word does not exaggerate His merits, but falls infinitely short of His glorious deserving. His name is called Wonderful; scripture does not merely say that God has given Him the name of Wonderful, but His name shall be called so. It shall be; at this time it is called Wonderful by all His believing people, and will continue to be so. As long as time endures there shall be men and angels and glorified spirits who shall always call Him by His right name, Wonderful. The Hebrew word for wonderful is also the word âMiracleâ and âMarvelous.â Here in Isaiah 9:6 it intends the Person more so than His name: He will be called âWonderful,â becoming the redeemer of His people in a most miraculous way, beginning with the miracle of conception and virgin birth. The great wonder of it is in the very thought of the true God becoming true man. What a wonder, the eternal self-existing creator condescending to be born of that which He created! Everything about Him is marvelous and wonderful, from His birth, to His death, to His resurrection. Now here is a wonder in itself, in the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ John saw a multitude that no man could number, called out of all nations, kindredâs, people, and tongues, who had washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. I say here is a wonder of wonders, that a multitude without number of guilty wretched sinners should be made righteous by one manâs righteousness, cleansed in one laver from their pollution, justified by one manâs satisfaction from all their transgressions, sprinkled unto pardon and sanctification with the blood of one man, even Jesus Christ our Lord.
