Finding the Fault Line - Dr. James A. Scudder Jr.

Today's Scripture: Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Matthew 5:23-24

An old story tells of two who had argued and hadn’t spoken to each other for many years.

One man heard that the other was talking about him, and he went to him and said, “Will you be kind enough to tell me my faults to my face, that I may profit by your Christian candor and try to get rid of them?”

“Yes, sir,” replied the other. “I will do it.”

They walked for a little while and the first man said, “Before you commence telling what you think wrong in me, will you please bow down with me, and let us pray over it, that my eyes may be opened to see my faults as you will tell them? You lead in prayer.”

The second man prayed. The first man said, “Now proceed with what you have to complain of in me.”

“After praying over it, your faults look so little that it is not worth talking about. The truth is I feel now, that in going around talking against you, I have been serving the Devil, and I have need that you pray for me and forgive me the wrong I have done you.”

This anecdote has a meaning for us all. It is easy to see the faults of others and easier still to talk about them to others. Yet, if we would sincerely pray about this fault-finding habit, we would find that God would minimize the errors and magnify other people’s wonderful qualities. Why don’t you take a moment to ask God to help you see the good in others rather than just the faults?
