DOCTRINAL INDIFFERENCE

Doctrinal indifference is no solution to the problem of doctrinal differences. God help me to know what I believe and to believe it with an immovable, uncompromising, and steadfast faith. Jude said, â€œOur salvation is a common salvation, and that he felt it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.â€ We have no cause for embarrassment if we believe God to be who He is and hold to a body of doctrine consistent with His being.
Iâ€™ve never found any wisdom in tearing one good thing down in order to establish another. For instance â€œDonâ€™t call me a Calvinist, call me a Biblicist.â€ As C.H. Spurgeon said, â€œCalvinism is just another name for the Gospel, and nothing more.â€ If I know that system of theology to be consistent with the Bible why should I shun identification with it? My defense is not of the man from which that term is derived, but of the truth, for truthâ€™s sake.
I refuse to speak derogatorily of the truth, and it grieves me to hear men do so. Do not the champions of modern fundamentalism make the boast, â€œWe have no creed but the Bible?â€
Convinced of the truths of the doctrine of the scripture I cannot sacrifice any part of the system of theology that God has been pleased to reveal to me, I cannot, even in the interest of peace among evangelical Christianity. It grieves me that through the yearâ€™s bonds between men, even of my own denomination, are broken because of indifference to orthodoxy.
The fashionable way is trifling with divine truth, and making things pleasant; thus the Gospel is debased and â€œanother gospelâ€ propagated. Todayâ€™s gospel treats revealed truth with indifference, so wide is the liberality in it that there is not anything made sure of. No black and white or yes or no, itâ€™s how you view it; error and truth are equally comprehensible. In the early church the deity of Christ was not denied, the work of the Holy Spirit was not ignored, the inspiration of scripture was not questioned, the atonement was not disbelieved, and regeneration was not dispensed with.
Deliver us from this deceitful infidelity that damages the erring man and often prevents his being reclaimed. It does mischief to our own hearts by teaching us that truth is unimportant and falsehood a trifle; and destroys our allegiance to the God of truth and makes us traitors instead of loyal subjects to the King of kings. There are truths that must be believed, they are essential to salvation, and if not believed the soul will be ruined. We must contend earnestly for the faith of our Fathers.
