SAINT PATRICK WAS A BAPTIST!
The following is an article by my good friend Dr. W. R. Downing

St. Patrickâ€™s Personal History--Patrick lived from about 387 to 461 AD. He was born in Scotland at Old Kirkpatrick, near Dumbarton (a Scotsman, not an Irishman). At age sixteen he was captured by Irish Marauders and taken to Ireland as a slave. It was during this time that he was converted. He escaped six years later and made his way home to Scotland, returning later to Ireland as a missionary.
St. Patrickâ€™s Doctrineâ€”Patrick was a New Testament Christian and held tenaciously to New Testament doctrine and practice. He believed and preached salvation by grace alone. He practiced baptism by immersion and immersed only those who had professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He held to the simplicity of the New Testament pattern for churches in both government and practice. He taught that the Lordâ€™s Supper was a memorial observance with believers partaking of both bread and wine.
St. Patrickâ€™s Christianityâ€”Patrick was not a Roman Catholic. Christianity had come to Britain during the Apostolic era of the first century AD and remained after the New Testament pattern until Pope Gregory the Great sent his emissary, Austin to Britain in 597 AD. This was 136 years after Patrickâ€™s death. Austin â€˜convertedâ€™ enough Saxons to wage war against the native Briton primitive Christians. Hundreds were killed, but Austin failed to subdue primitive Christianity completely. Romanism (the Roman Catholic faith) did not become the official religion of Britain until the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD.
St. Patrickâ€™s Dayâ€”Although Roman Catholics, and especially the Irish, celebrate this day traditionally and ignorantly, we do intelligently acknowledge its significance and the man whose faith, doctrine and ministry it commemorates, for we have every reason to believe that St. Patrick was a Baptist.

Traditions are honorable only when they are biblically and historically accurate; otherwise it is an abomination to God.â€”Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus saying, â€œWhy do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.â€ He answered and said to them, â€œWhy do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition.â€ Matthew 15:1
