Stop the Violence
18 school shootings in the first eight weeks of the year is too many. One school shooting in the first eight weeks of the year is too many too. We live in a violent society today. Life seems to be devalued today. People seemed trapped by their circumstances. They feel the only way to handle their difficulties is to lash out through violence. How did we come to this? How did our society become so broken that people think their only course of action is to walk into a school with an automatic weapon, opening fire and taking the life of innocent bystanders? We have also seen in the recent past, that schools are not the only place where violent actions take place. How can we forget the tragedy that took place at the country music concert in Las Vegas just weeks ago. Why? Why is so much violence present in our society?
The answer is that violence resides in the heart of man. Jeremiah 17:9 tells us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Man’s heart is wicked. Every heart of every man is wicked. This does not mean that every heart displays wicked actions. It doesn’t mean that every heart acts as wickedly as it can. It only means that at the core of every man resides a wicked heart.
So, since the problem is wickedness that resides in the heart of man, the answer can not be legislated. No amount of gun control can stop the wicked acts of man. In the same sense, the right to bear arms is not the answer either. It is time that we quit giving so much thought to these issues. It’s time we come to grips with the real issue which is sin and wickedness that resides in the heart of man.
Folks, it’s time that we as Christians lay down our political agendas. It’s time that we are no longer Republicans or Democrats. It’s time that the right to keep and bear arms is no longer our primary focus. Whether we think we should have the right or not, guns are not the real issue. Although, honest discussions need to take place on this issue.
It’s time that we as Christians focus on the real issue. It’s time we admit the topic which needs to be discussed is the heart of man. It’s time we discuss how we can resolve the issues which are present. No, we can not change the heart of men, only God can do that. However, we can lay aside political agendas and begin to follow the great commandments, to love God with all your heart, and to love your neighbor as your self.
How will this make a difference? Well, if we are loving God with all our heart, we will love His creation. We will love every life which is created in His image, whether in the womb or out. We will love every life no matter its ethnicity, or its ability to add to our society. By loving our neighbor, we will understand that our neighbor has a wicked heart. We will understand that the only way that heart will be changed is for that heart to understand the sacrifice God made so they could have eternal life. We will need to understand that the wicked hearts of men are going to sin. What they need is not someone to judge them, but for someone to show them the love of Jesus.
Finally, what might be the most important thought for we who are Christians is to understand how we have lost sight of our Commission. We have allowed political agendas to keep us from the work of God. We have allowed fear to keep us from speaking up for Christ. We have lost sight of the main point of Christianity is to share with the world how Jesus came not to destroy men’s lives; but to seek and to save that which is lost. Please, recognize the need today to share the love of Jesus with someone. Please, keep your eyes on the one thing which will truly stop the violence, finding life and peace in Jesus!
