Here in the United States we have a national debt problem. Our national debt is in the trillions of dollars and continues to rise. It is estimated that, to pay off the national debt, the amount owed per family is around $152,000. Of course, that number doesn’t take into account each family’s personal debts such as mortgages, car loans, and credit cards. As a nation, we truly do have a debt problem.

However, each of us also has a debt problem that we can’t pay off. All of us are in a deep debt, and that is to love one another. We owe love to the world, and to God because He first loved us.

Our passage today reminds us that there is only one way to keep God’s law, and that is to love one another. We can’t keep the law by trying real hard to keep the Ten Commandments. We fulfill the law by loving our neighbor as ourselves.

It is easy to love certain people, especially those who are kind to you. Anyone can do that. Jesus reminded us that even the Pharisees loved those who loved them, but true love is loving those who hate you, and praying for those who despitefully use you.

As you think about the debt of love that you owe, ask the Lord to help you to love those who you have previously considered “unlovable”.
