"Our ONLY Comfort!" Lord's Day 1, I Peter1, & Romans 8 The catechism guides us as it lays out the Word of God to us as the whole council and all the doctrines of the Word of God. It is replete with scriptural references as the Word of God that shines light on many various topics that we must deal with in this life so we are not destroyed "for lack of knowledge." No greater Lord's Day has been of more comfort to the people of God than this one!
This Lord's Day has been memorized by many. It is so meaningful to the child of God. What is your only comfort in this life and when you die? It is a definitely a Spiritual question. It proceeds from the child of God and from a heart full of faith! It is NOT a bodily comfort as the world wants. We find ourselves in the realm of continual sin, corruption, decay, and continual dying. It encompasses us and is a spiritual burden to us that we must face and answer sooner or later. We all experience people around us dying and passing away. We too share in the worlds bodily decays and diseases, BUT see things in a very difference perspective I hope. A spiritual perspective where nothing can separate us from the Living God!
We belong to Christ in our living and our dying! That's our comfort together! That's our comfort individually as well! God breathed into us a living soul and we view our life in that. We then confess that we are NOT our own but belong to Christ who is the center of the gospel. Man likes to boast in themselves, but can you imagine belonging to yourself? It is not so...but we have redemption and are lifted up into His very presence in Glory! Body and soul for time and ETERNITY!
It is all comprehensive. In ALL of our LIVING and in ALL of our DYING. We ARE justified by our Lord Jesus Christ and are given and share in all His glory! The world dies and wakes to meet their Maker and he is his own, but we awake and belong to Christ and are justified in Him! You may say it with me...."I belong to Christ! He bought me!" Even over Satan He gave me the victory. He can no longer speak doubt into my ear and in life and death we have nothing to be afraid of. There is only one way to live happily...and that is God must reveal our sin to us that we may cry out to Christ and find redemption which leads to a life of gratitude for that redemption.
Let us so discover anew and so live our lives that we may have and know our comfort and live happy here and in the life to come in eternity!
What is your only comfort?
