Can you imagine being completely content regardless of your circumstances? Can you conceive of a joy that doesn’t fluctuate with things that happen around you? Can you imagine a deep sense of satisfaction, so ingrained that you cannot be distracted by any alluring suggestion? God doesn’t have to imagine these things, He already has them.
Among Christian people, from time to time, you will encounter a relationship that is deep and wonderful. You will find brothers in Christ who are moved to the heart by a fresh understanding of the grace, mercy, patience, goodness, or any other attribute of God. They are so enthralled with the delights of God that they have sweet fellowship. It appears that what one is thinking, the other is also thinking. The beauties of Christ that the one loves, the other also loves. In the church of Christ one can truly come into deep communion with members of God’s family. Isn’t it delightful when this is the story of your Christian marriage? Profound, intimate, spiritual oneness.
Among the persons of the Godhead this vast, delightful communion has always existed. It is so consuming, engaging and satisfying that God could have existed forever and never grown weary of that enchanting, completely satisfying sense of oneness. Jesus said repeatedly that the Father loves the Son (John 3:35, 5:20, 15:9). In fact, as the Father looks upon His Son Jesus, He sees in Him all of the things that bring Him complete pleasure forever. We discover this by the Father’s two exclamations, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17, 17:5) In all of His eternal realm with all of its stupendous, immeasurable glory, God the Father sees something of exquisite beauty. Something so arresting and captivating and attractive that the eternal, infinite God can say that what brings His heart pleasure is found in His Son. God is gazing with satisfaction at something the world isn’t seeing in Jesus. Surely, if there is something so attractive about Christ that captivates the heart of God the Father, shouldn’t we become more eager to see it? You and I are so prone to see the beauties of our sin and to fall for it, yet in Christ resides a beauty so breathtaking that it can move the Heart of God to pleasure, and we can’t see it!
Jesus said that He always does what pleases the Father. (John 8:29) In the same verse, the Father is always with His Son. There is never a moment, except for Golgotha, where that indescribable togetherness and pleasure that the Father derives from the Son and His beauty is absent. Even on the cross, the Father may have abandoned His Son, yet His sense of complete pleasure and admiration for Him was never stronger. The heart of God burst with love for His pristine Son as He expressed the passion of the heart of God on the cross.
Oh God, open our eyes to see the loveliness of Jesus! Take our blind eyes and give them sight to see what you see in Him! Fill our senses with the captivating aroma of Christ so that we too will find more pleasure than we can utilize in the beautiful person of Christ.
