One author has compared the universe to a drop of dew on the hem of the garment of God. God is not restricted by space at all. God is not restricted by time, gravity, finances, expertise, ability to plan, resources or by any other thing. Stretching out in infinity, God infinitely transcends even our most extreme imaginations of His vastness. With the breath of His mouth, a universe bursts into being and He smiles. To feed the sun its thousands of millions of tons of fuel to keep burning every day is trivial, not even pocket change. God is able to create and sustain an infinitely greater cosmos without so much as noticing a drain on His energy or resources.
Yet at the same time, He is able to be totally engaged with every tiny little detail of life and death on every square metre of ground on planet earth all the time! God is completely absorbed with every thrilling detail of your life forever! And in that delightful omnipotent absorption, His heart is rapt with every thought and even every motive behind every thought you think (1 Chronicles 28:9). He moves and moulds the very thought processes in your mind, drawing you with cords of love toward Himself. He cultivates in the minds of His people thoughts of longing for Himself. As those seeds germinate and individuals begin to yearn for God, He draws the curtain aside just a tweak, so that blind eyes can begin to make out the overwhelmingly lovely form of the beautiful God. God delights to thrill the hearts of His people with more and more ability to see Him with the eyes of faith.
My point here is that for God to exist as God, it is a thrilling experience. God is not bored. God is not lazy. God is not apathetic. God’s existence is packed full of the most excellent experiences that the infinite God can design and bring into existence. Remember the psalmist said that at the right hand of God are compelling joy and eternal pleasures (Psalm 16:11).
In the previous part of this series of reflections on Psalm 16, we considered only one of the wonderful attributes of God which He shares to a greater degree with people. I have been saying what a thrill it is for God to exist in the form of God. Consider the thrill in the heart of God as He demonstrates mercy. (You could and should consider this regarding all of God’s attributes, but for the sake of space, I will simply consider God’s mercy.)
Having been a paramedic I can appreciate the sense of satisfaction that comes from rescuing someone from a horrible and miserable situation and seeing them restored to a full quality of life. Sometimes people would write to thank us—mostly not.
God can understand the true gravity of the fall in a way we do not yet understand. He understands the misery of sin and the terrors of hell. When God rescued sinners in Christ at Calvary, He performed the greatest rescue of all time, unequalled in magnitude and glorious heroism. This is a seed thought for you. Meditate on how thrilling it must be for the infinite God, with all of His attributes, to simply exist. And here we have only touched on one attribute. God’s existence is full, delightful, rousing and unparalleled.
