âAnd many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book: but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.â John 20:30-31 Most books are written for monetary profit. many are written with little or no concern and compassion for the readers at all. The Gospel is a different matter altogether and it is stated in no better terms than the passage above, âthat ye might believe.â The Gospel was written under inspiration of God with divine compassion flowing through it to subjects utterly incapable of returns. It was written for the âpoor in spirit,â bankrupt, with nothing to pay. At least three things are learned from John 20:30-31. It is not the main thrust of the scriptures to satisfy the curious by recording multitudes of signs and wonders. Not all was written that Jesus did in the presence of His disciples, but enough that His office might be vindicated. The main thrust of the scripture is to set forth Jesus, the incarnate Son of God. Sufficient enough says the apostle in the text above, that men might believe that âJesus is the Christ, the Son of God.â The purpose of the preeminence of Christ in the scriptures is that men might âbelieve that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.â When men seek from scripture any other design they find it a sealed book. It is absolutely essential that it should be belief in the Son of God, not believing in Him as a prophet. The faith that is absolutely necessary is âthe belief in Him as the Son of God;â he who does not believe in the Deity of Christ has not a Savior who can save him. The work of saving a soul is a divine operation and no one but a divine being can accomplish it. It is He who sits on the throne who says, âBehold I make all things new!â To save a soul there must be a work performed which is comparable to the resurrection; to raise the dead there must be the presence and power of God. It is a work that cannot be performed by an angel or by any created being. The Highest alone must to accomplish it, âI kill and I make alive,â the power of life and death must rest with God alone. The work of salvation needs a power that is divine, he who believes in Christ as a mere man has not believed in a person who can give him salvation; Christ cannot accomplish the task if He be only man, the Savior must be God. Do you believe on the Son of God? Faith in the Son of God is the gate to blessing. Faith is that window by which the divine light of Jesusâ love comes streaming into the soul. This is the way by which Godâs mercy enters the heart of man. Faith is the ground where the decisive battle will be fought; for on believing or not believing on the Son of God the eternal destiny of your soul will rest.
